Feeding Your Soul

Here is a helpful way to nourish your life with God’s Word. Print it out and keep it part of your routine. We all know how hard it is to slow down and meditate on God’s Word but if we want live out what we believe in our daily life it’s essential to reflect on who God is, what’s He’s done for us, and what He’s called us to do.

Thinking Through Hard Questions

Here is a helpful talk by D.A. Carson on one the most difficult issues all people should think through: what does it mean for God to be loving? We often let our own emotions or life experiences rule our thinking instead of God’s Word. Take a few day or do it all in one sitting but this talk will provide clarity from God’s Word on a difficult issue.

Sitting in the mall

Sitting at my regular study spot (*bucks). All I have to do is look up from my books and see the signs that say buy me. 20-50% off, SALE, 50% off plus store credit! If I look the other way I see empty, closed stores: the latest victim of our vicious economy. Yes, I am sitting in a mall while my family does some Christmas shopping. I love Christmas -mostly because I get to spend extra time with my family. Christmas is way better with kids! I am studying Galatians 5:4-5 for Sunday which presents the question, “What child is this?” The answer is: this child, born of a woman, will bring excessive blessing and freedom. Not the blessing of scoring a great buy at the mall. Life changing blessing and freedom that comes in newness of life found only in Jesus.

Why I Like Church

Paul says in Ephesians 2:13, “But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” Paul is referring to Gentile Christians  who were once considered the  outsiders but because of Jesus they were now part of the family of God. It reminds me of S.E. Hinton’s book The Outsiders. She tells the story of “Greasers” who live out an intrinsic loyalty that comes from  the pain of life: something we all can relate to. That’s why the “But now”  has radical implications for our lives. When a community of people lives out the “But now in Christ Jesus” and shares their lives it creates a visible display of the power of God.  Sunday night at the Gathering we had a cook out, worship, and open mic testimony night. One guy asked for prayer as he is applying for a Fulbright scholarship to do HIV research in India; another young man spoke about how God has revealed his personal pride, and through this strengthened his friendships. These testimonies are the result of, “but now in Christ Jesus.”
